Pitching Falters in 11-5 Loss

May 5, 2014 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Clearwater Threshers News Release

After rain washed out the entirety of the Daytona series, the Clearwater Threshers finally kicked off their east coast road trip, suffering an 11-5 loss to the Brevard County Manatees.

Despite a four-run rally in the sixth inning on Sunday, the Threshers (5-22) could not overcome an early deficit in Viera.

The Manatees (16-13) used the long ball to get ahead against Threshers starter Miguel Nunez (1-3). Michael Reed hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Victor Roache launched one of his own to start the second. It was the first of three homers on the day for the Manatees' left fielder.

Down 4-0, Clearwater broke the shutout against Jorge Lopez (3-2) in the fourth.

Angelo Mora lined a double to left to lead off, and a wild pitch allowed Mora to scamper in to third. Pete Lavin brought him in with a grounder to short for his team-leading 13th RBI, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

After Roache hit his second homer of the day in the bottom half, Brevard County would break things open with a four-spot in the fifth. With two runs home in the inning, Roache greeted reliever Steven Inch in his season-debut by driving his third home run of the day to open up a 9-1 Manatees' advantage.

The Threshers brought themselves right back into the ballgame by answering with four of their own. Brian Pointer got the rally going by drawing a leadoff walk. With one down, KC Serna singled and both runners advanced an extra base on an errant throw from shortstop Orlando Arcia.

Lavin reached on an infield single to load the bases, and with two outs Art Charles came through with a two-run single to plate both Pointer and Serna. Lavin and Charles moved up to second and third when the throw home was mishandled by catcher Cameron Garfield. Gabriel Lino brought them both around with a double to cut the deficit to 9-5.

Ethan Martin, who joined the Threshers' roster on Sunday to begin a rehab assignment, tossed a scoreless sixth inning. He permitted just one baserunner, coming on a two-out walk to Nathan Orf.

Brevard County's final two runs of the day came in the seventh inning against Jeb Stefan, who pitched the final two frames out of the pen for Clearwater.

The Threshers will look to rebound in game two of the series on Monday, as Clearwater and Brevard County will square off at 6:35 p.m.
