Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (May 4, 2014) - The top two offenses in the Florida State League took the field on Sunday afternoon less than a week after their first encounter resulted in two Stone Crabs victories at Tradition Field. After a tightly contested series sweep against the Hammerheads to get back to a game over .500, Charlotte had an opportunity to take a share of the South Division lead with a win. But all it took was two long innings for the Mets offense to pull away for a 5-0 shutout, bringing the Stone Crabs season-best five game winning streak to an end in front of 1,006 at Charlotte Sports Park.

Jeff Ames was making his second consecutive start against the vaunted Mets lineup since returning from the disabled list with a strained bicep. After receiving a no decision in a 7-3 loss last Monday night, the righthander was not as fortunate the second time around. A pair of walks and a T.J. Rivera single loaded the bases with nobody out in the first before Jairo Perez' RBI single made it 1-0. Cam Maron's sacrifice fly to center gave St. Lucie a 2-0 lead, and they were threatening to add more after a walk to Aderlin Rodriguez reloaded the bases. The former first round pick then got right fielder Eudy Pina to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

The Stone Crabs struggles with the bases loaded persisted in the first against Matt Koch, who was the winning pitcher in the first encounter against Ames. Two walks and a single by Maxx Tissenbaum brought up Justin O'Conner with the bases full and two outs, but the former Louisville Cardinal got the Stone Crabs catcher to whiff and end the inning.

After two perfect innings by Ames, the Mets went back to work in the fourth to add to the lead. Cam Maron's groundball to third hopped off Tyler Goeddel for an error to open the inning. A single by Rodriguez and a passed ball placed runners at second and third for Pina, who bounced back from his groundout in the first with a two-run single for a 4-0 lead. Ames then got the next two outs, and with Pina at second, Dilson Herrera brought in his tenth run of the season to make it 5-0 Mets.

Koch (3-0) had more than enough run support and got a pair of double plays in the third and fifth. Although he put a man on in each of his five innings, the only runner to get into scoring position after the first was Josh Sale, who was left stranded at second following a one out double in the second. The Stone Crabs had one final opportunity with the bases loaded in the eighth against Seth Lugo. Two out singles by Tissenbaum and Patrick Leonard, and a walk to Carter, brought up O'Conner for the second time. But the catcher went down swinging in a hurry, and kept the Stone Crabs scoreless for the first time this season.
