Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Right-handed pitcher Williams Perez faced the minimum number of Charlotte Knights' (57-46) batters through 5.2 innings to lead the Gwinnett Braves (51-50) to a 5-3 win on Sunday at Coolray Field. The G-Braves finished off a three-game sweep of the Knights.
The sweep was Gwinnett's second of the season and first over Charlotte at home since April 19-21, 2014. The victory also moved the G-Braves back over the .500 mark for the first time since they were 42-41 on July 5.
Perez (W, 3-1), who is on a Major League rehab assignment for the Atlanta Braves, gave up a triple to Micah Johnson on his seventh pitch of the game, but Johnson tried to go for an inside-the-park home run and was thrown out at home plate. Perez didn't allow another baserunner until he hit Drew Garcia with a pitch after he had recorded the first two outs of the sixth inning. He struck out five and threw 78 pitches (45 strikes) in his third rehab start.
Right-hander Jake Brigham (H, 1) replaced Perez in the sixth and induced a groundout to second base by Johnson to end the inning, keeping Gwinnett in front 2-0.
Consecutive one-out singles in the second inning from Cedric Hunter and Sean Kazmar launched the G-Braves' only rally of the game against Charlotte right-handed starter Brad Penny (L, 5-4). Hunter singled and stole second base before he scored on a single by Kazmar, who also stole second. Todd Cunningham followed with a double into the right-field corner to drive in Kazmar and establish a two-run cushion.
Barrett Kleinknecht led off the seventh inning with his fourth home run of the season to extend the lead to 3-0, but that advantage did not last long.
Brigham ran into trouble in the eighth inning when he allowed the first three batters to reach base on a walk and two singles. A fielder's choice groundout by Garcia allowed Chris Marrero to score the Knights' first run, and a single from Johnson scored Tyler Colvin to narrow Gwinnett's lead to 3-2.
Right-handed reliever David Peterson (H, 1) induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat, and the G-Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Charlotte left-handed reliever Onelki Garcia began his second inning of work with a walk to Joey Terdoslavich that ignited the two-run rally for Gwinnett. Terdoslavich scored when Garcia missed a toss from first baseman Chris Marrero on a grounder hit by Kazmar. Cunningham followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Hunter.
The 5-2 lead still wasn't safe, as the Knights mounted a comeback in the ninth. Peterson gave up consecutive singles to open the frame and lefty Matt Marksberry allowed up a single to the only batter he faced. Right-hander Peter Moylan (S, 2) entered the game and yielded an RBI single to Marerro to cut the lead to 5-3. Moylan recovered, however, inducing a 1-2-3 double play from Colvin and a groundout to first base by Chris Jones to end the game.
Hunter, Kazmar and Kleinknecht each had a pair of hits for the G-Braves. Hunter scored two runs, Kazmar scored one and had an RBI and Kleinknecht had a run scored and RBI from his seventh-inning home run.
Johnson was the only Charlotte batter to have more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
