SWB Game Notes

July 26, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders worked 10 walks, one off their season high, in a 10-2 thrashing of the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders have won four in a row for the first time since a season-best six-game winning streak from June 8-13.

SERIESOUS BUSINESS: SWB has this series cemented and bids for a sweep this afternoon. The franchise had not won a set against the Mud Hens since claiming both series in 2012. The last sweep came in a rain-shortened two-game series in Moosic from June 15-16, 2009. In the Yankees era (2007-present), SWB has never swept Toledo in a series of three or more games.

WALK ON: The RailRiders' season-high mark for walks in a game (11) came on April 20 against Lehigh Valley, but the 4-3 win went 15 innings. Toledo starter Tim Melville (4-9) issued a career-worst six walks last night, lifting his season-long total to a league-high 60. His nine losses tie him for the second-most in the league. Only Buffalo's Daniel Norris (10) has more.

TRIPLE THREAT: Ben Gamel got the RailRiders on the board with a three-run triple in the second inning, his league-best 11th three-base hit of the year. He has more triples than Norfolk (9) and Pawtucket (10) and stands tied for fourth in all of MiLB. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

FULL HOUSE: The RailRiders' first home game since July 9 saw a sellout crowd of 10,000 fill PNC Field on Friday. That made for the team's second sellout of the season along with the Fourth of July contest against Buffalo. Last night, standing-room-only seating was again required for the 8,171 that flocked to PNC Field. That made for the team's ninth fixed-seat sellout (7,115) of 2015.

YOU DOWN WITH OBP?: Rob Refsnyder went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. He has hit safely in 17 of 20 at Triple-A going back to June 24. Over that stretch, he has slashed .368/.494/.529/1.024 with MiLB's fourth-best OBP (tops among full-season players). His average and OPS in that window each rank third the IL.

AUTOMATIC FIRST DOWN: Refsnyder reached base on catcher's interference in the sixth. He is the only man in the IL to do so multiple times this season and has turned the trick thrice in total. He did so with Josmil Pinto catching and Michael Tonkin pitching for Rochester at PNC Field on April 13. The call also came in Thursday's road trip finale at Indianapolis against the battery of Tony Sanchez and Angel Sanchez.

SMOKIN': Jose Pirela went 2-for-3 yesterday with a three-run homer, a sac fly, a walk and two runs scored. He has eight multi-hit showing over his last 11 SWB games played. He has snapped out of a 5-for-49 (.102) slide at Triple-A with hits in nine of those 11 affairs. During his string, he has gone 20-for-44 (.455) with five doubles, one homer, eight RBIs and 14 runs scored.

FREE BIRD: With a double last night, Greg Bird has reached safely in all but one of his 18 games with SWB including a hit in 15 of those affairs while slashing .300/.380/.486/.865.

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders lead the IL in batting average (.273) and OBP (.342)...SWB must win half of its six remaining July games to post a winning month...Over the first eight seasons as a Yankees affiliate, SWB logged an above .500 July six times and the two exceptions both saw the squad finish a game under sea level...Toledo owns the IL's worst team ERA (4.81) while turning a league-low 72 double plays...Only one other team has an ERA over 4.00 (Louisville, 4.13) and only one other squad has recorded fewer than 90 twin-killings (Rochester, 88)...The IL average in each category sits at 3.62 and 97.5 respectively...The Mud Hens fell to a season-worst 15 games under .500 last night.
