Williams lifts Otters to huge win
August 23, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN â Grant Williams rewrote the record books with his complete game shutout as the Evansville Otters beat the Kalamazoo Kings 5-0.
Leading 1-0 in the second, Dave Mischo hit his first professional homer, a two-run shot to boost the Otter lead to 3-0. The next batter, Sean Flynn gave Evansville their first back-to-back shots of the year making it 4-0. A David Trujillo homer in the third gave the Otters the final margin of victory.
Williams was masterful in winning his 10th game of the season, tying at Otters single season record set by Matt Silcock in 1999 and matched by Tod Ewasko last year. He struck out eight in the game, passing teammate Jeremy Lewis for the Otters single-season lead with 115. Williams' shutout was his fourth of the season, matching the Frontier League record with four set last season by Ben Ally of Washington and Chris Spigner of Richmond.
Justin Garcia starts the series finale for Evansville against David McWatters for Kalamazoo.
With the win, the Otters magic number to clinch a playoff spot falls to seven. Any combination of Otters wins and Kings losses puts Evansville in the Frontier League's second season for consecutive campaigns for the first time since the Otters made the playoffs four times in a row from 1997-2000.
