Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - History could be made this weekend as head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson needs one more win to garner sole possession of second all time in wins for a Checkers head coach.

Wilkinson has captured 146 wins since being named head coach of the Charlotte Checkers during the middle of the 2003-04 season. During that year, he replaced Don MacAdam, the very coach he will surpass after accumulating his next victory. At 33 years old, Wilkinson is the second youngest active coach in the ECHL and has led his team to the playoffs the previous three seasons. He was the first goalie ever selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning during the seventh round of the 1992 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Wilkinson will have an opportunity to capture his 147th win at home on Thursday as the Checkers battle the South Carolina Stingrays in a rematch from Tuesday night's overtime thriller. During that game, the Checkers mounted a third period comeback erasing a two goal deficit only to fall in the extra session by a score of 3-2.

The Checkers began their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Feb. 7 against the South Carolina Stingrays. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
