Washington Wild Things News Release

AVON, Ohio - Casey Barnes dominated through seven innings, allowing one run on five hits as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, won their second straight game over the Lake Erie Crushers on Sunday evening 6-1.

The Wild Things once again found themselves down early after allowing an early run in the bottom of the first inning.

Much like Saturday evening, they would battle back. Washington rallied for six unanswered runs beginning in the fourth inning when Jim Vahalik singled to left field to score Mark Samuelson to even the score at one apiece.

They would add on with two more in the fifth. Chris Lloyd singled and stole second to lead off the frame. Gus Benusa then singled to center to score Lloyd to give the Wild Things a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Benusa would later score on a sacrifice fly by A.J. Nunziatio.

The two teams would trade zeroes until the eighth inning, when Washington struck again, this time for three runs.

Nunziato got things going with a single to center. Samuelson and Brand Agustin each followed with a walk to load the bases.

A third straight walk issued to Shain Stoner delivered the Wild Things' fourth run, scoring Nunziato from third. Vahalik then ripped a 1-2 pitch to left field to extend their lead to 5-1.

Stoner scored to make it 6-1 when Rick Devereaux reached second on a fielding error by center fielder Adrian Ortiz.

The Wild Things made things interesting in the ninth inning, allowing the Crushers to load the bases in the final frame with one. That's when Chandler Barnard entered the game to replace Al Yevoli and got Kyle Weldon and Robby Kuzdale to each pop out to clinch Washington's 26th win of the season.

Barnard used pitches to finish off the Crushers, throwing seven of them for strikes.

Washington will go for a sweep of the Crushers Monday night at 7:05. Wild Things' All-Star Gary Lee take the mound opposite Pittsburgh native Josh Hungerman.

The Wild Things return home on Friday, August 3 to host the Crushers. It's a Friday fireworks night and tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting www.washingtonwildthings.com, stopping by the CONSOL Energy Park box office, or by calling 866-456-WILD.
