MARION, IL - Southern Illinois picked up four runs in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and cruise to a 7-4 win against the Grizzlies Sunday night.
Southern Illinois (38-27) picked up two runs in the opening inning off Grizzlies starter Paul Tremlin (4-2). Miners first baseman Gerardo Avila drove in both runs on his fifth home run of the season.
Gateway (37-28) tied the game at two with two runs on RBI doubles from Jon Myers and Chris McClendon in the fourth.
The tie was short-lived, though. Southern Illinois scored four runs on four hits and one Gateway error in the bottom of the fourth to take a four-run lead. Chad Maddox hit a home run while Carlos Mendez and Alvaro Ramirez picked up RBI singles.
Jonathan Johnson picked up a sacrifice fly in the seventh and McClendon drilled a solo home run to deep right field in ninth to finish off the Grizzlies scoring.
Three players combined for all of the Grizzlies seven hits. McClendon led the way with three, Myers had two doubles and John Shelby had two hits.
Tremlin took the loss, giving up five earned runs in six innings. The right-hander from Quartz Hill, California has now lost two straight starts.
The Grizzlies conclude their series with the Miners on Monday night. Game three of the series is at 7:05 CT with right-hander Tim Brown (7-2) making the start for Gateway.
