July 29, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
(FLORENCE, KENTUCKY) - The Evansville Otters rallied early and held on late to win the first game of a doubleheader 6-5 at the Florence Freedom.
Both teams scored a run in the opening inning as Evansville first baseman Nick Schwaner hit an RBI double to left field and Florence shortstop Junior Arrojo hit a leadoff home run in the bottom half.
Evansville then re-gained the lead in the second inning when designated hitter Luis Uribe laced a run-producing single to right-center field.
That 2-1 lead would hold until the bottom of the fourth inning when Florence evened up the score.
Looking to avoid a shutdown inning, Evansville loaded up the bases in the fifth inning with one out. Right fielder DeAngeo Mack was then able to bring two runners home with a single down the third base line. Two more unearned runs would be plated later in the inning as Evansville leapt ahead 6-2.
Trailing by four, Florence fought back for a run in the fifth and rallied for two more runs in the seventh inning against closer Eric Massingham. With the go-ahead runner on base, Massingham induced catcher Victor Gomez to fly out and end the game.
Evansville improves to 28-37 with the win as Florence falls to 35-30.
Matt Crim (2-7) earns the win for the Otters. Crim allowed three runs (two earned) over 5.0 innings. Both of his wins this season have been against the Florence Freedom on the road. Lefty Brent Choban (0-1) receives the loss after yielding five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings. Massingham recorded his Frontier League leading 17th save as well.
The second game of the doubleheader will begin at 6:05 p.m. EDT.
Florence will throw lefthander Andres Caceres (6-2, 4.63 ERA) against Evansville's lefty Adam Champion (3-4, 3.12 ERA).
