Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Jose Vargas set the Traverse City Beach Bums single-season homerun record and Kyle Colligan reached base seven times as the Beach Bums split a doubleheader with the Road Warriors, winning game one 15-2 before falling in game two 10-7.

The Beach Bums got the offense going early and often in game one, storming out of the gate with three runs in the first and four in the second to build up a 7-0 lead. The lineup was keyed by an RBI single by Colligan in the first. In the second, after the first two batters were retired, Kyle Eveland singled and was followed on the bases by walks to Brian Heere and Ryan Still. Vargas came up next and lined a double off the bag at third to score all three runners. Chase Burch came up next and singled home Vargas.

In the third, Traverse City pushed the lead to 9-0 when Sean Gusrang hit his 11th homer of the year, a two-run shot that followed a Colligan single. After two runs came in during the fourth on a Chase Burch double to score Vargas and a bases loaded walk by Marcus Nidiffer, the Beach Bums continued to pile up the runs in the fifth. Still led off with a walk before Vargas homered for the 22nd time on the season to make it 13-1. TC would get another run in the inning as Jeff Flagg doubled and moved to third on a balk before being brought home by a Colligan single.

Traverse City would cap their scoring in the game when Vargas homered in the sixth, his 23rd of the year.

The game one win went to Brooks Belter (8-1) who tossed the first one-hitter in Beach Bums history while also getting his first career complete game in the process. Greg Hendrix (0-1) took the loss for the Road Warriors.

Game two did not start out kindly for Traverse City as the Road Warriors jumped out to a 7-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth. The lone Beach Bums run in the stretch was a solo homer by Vargas. It was his third homer of the twinbill and his 24th of the season, breaking J. T. Hall's record set last year.

TC would fight back, scoring two runs in the fourth and plating three in the fifth to close the gap to 7-6, but were unable to climb the mountain as the Road Warriors plated three in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Matt Schimpf (4-6) picked up the game two win with David Deminsky (5-2) absorbing the setback.

The series wraps up on Monday when Scott Dunn (2-2, 4.15) takes the hill for Traverse City against Shawn Marquardt who will be making his professional debut for the Road Warriors. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with all tickets being $5 with general admission seating.
