Joliet Slammers News Release

Sunday, July 29 - 2:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #65 - Home Game #35 (27-37), (13-21)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (5-6, 3.79 ERA) vs. RHP #22 Mike Recchia (8-2, 2.75 ERA)

Last time out.

Joliet pounced for three runs in the first inning and never surrendered the lead in a 5-3 win. Patrick Norris laced a leadoff single, his first of three hits, and came home afterward on an RBI double by Brad Netzel. Two more scored in the inning on a throwing error by Windy City third baseman C.J. Gillman. The Slammers added another run in the second when Norris doubled to score Josh Lyon, and made it 5-0 when David Christensen lofted a sacrifice fly in the third. Windy City closed the gap in the seventh inning off run-scoring singles by Zach Aakhus and Brandon Decker to make the score 5-3. Jim Schult was phenomenal for Joliet and earned the win. He set down the first six Bolts hitters in order, allowed one single in the third, and then retired 11 straight before finally allowing more baserunners in the seventh. He fanned six, and Joliet pitching did not allow a single walk in the ballgame.

For Starters.

Steven Maxwell is coming off a no-decision against the Traverse City Beach Bums on July 24 as he went six innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. In Maxwell's six losses this season the Slammers are only averaging 2.3 runs per game. He's faced Windy City twice this season, coming away with a no-decision on June 6 in a 5-3 win and a loss on July 19 in a 5-1 defeat. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Home woes.

The Slammers are 13-21 at home this season, worst in the Frontier League.

The bullpen is back.

After a rough June (5.74 ERA), Joliet's bullpen has bounced back nicely in July, posting a 2.83 ERA.

Abel is able.

Abel Nieves leads the Slammers in all three Triple Crown categories with a.364 batting average, six home runs and 35 RBI. David Christensen has nine home runs on the season but all nine came with the now defunct London Rippers.

Workhorse.

Geoff Brown leads the Slammers in appearances as he's pitched in 30 games this season. The rookie out of the University of Washington has a 3.19 ERA in 31 innings.

Save me.

Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is tied for first in the league with 16 saves in 17 attempts.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 9-28 in games when they make an error. They are 18-9 in games when they do not.

Transaction Wire.

The Slammers released OF Chretien Matz today. They signed OF Eric McGee.
