Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners evened things up with the Gateway Grizzlies as they Miners defeated the Grizzlies 7-4 at Rent One Park. Cody Hall pitched well in earning his fifth win of the season. He went 6.1 innings and gave up three runs off six hits. He walked one and struck out five batters. The Miners are 9-0 in all of Cody Hall's start this season.
The Miners took an early lead off Grizzlies starter Paul Tremlin as first baseman Gerardo Avila hit a two run home run to right-center field to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. That home run was Avila's first as a Southern Illinois Miner. The Grizzlies added two runs off Miners starter Cody Hall in the top of the fourth inning as Grizzlies left fielder Jon Myers hit a double to bring in a run and right fielder John Shelby added another run to even the game at 2-2.
The Miners answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning off Tremlin as Chad Maddox hit a lead off home run to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. That home run was Maddox's ninth of the season. Carlos Mendez added a single and a RBI with one out. Alvaro Ramirez also brought in a run with a base hit and scored on an error by Paul Tremlin as he tried to pick off Ramirez at second base. The Miners moved to the top of the fifth inning with a 6-2 lead.
The Grizzlies added another run off Hall in the top of the seventh inning as second baseman Jonathan Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-3 game. Gabriel Shaw pitched 1.2 innings in relief only walking one batter. The Miners added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Grizzlies reliever Logan Mahon when Gerardo Avila hit a base hit and a RBI to bring in Jake Kaase to make it a 7-3 game.
Albert Ayala came in the ninth inning to close out the game and gave up a solo home run to Grizzlies third baseman Chris McClendon to make it a 7-4 game. The Miners would hold on and win the game to even the series at one.
The Miners and Grizzlies wrap up the three game set at Rent One Park tomorrow night. First pitch is at 7:05 as the Grizzlies will send ace Tim Brown (7-2, 2.30) to the mound against Miners ace David Harden (6-4, 3.83).
