Wild Things beat Mavericks 2-1

Washington, Pa -- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, set a new Frontier League record of 12 consecutive victories as they beat the Mid-Missouri Mavericks 2-1. The Wild Things advanced their record to 45-24 and maintained the top position in the Eastern division Monday night at Falconi Field in front of a sell-out crowd of 3,206.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Brent Metheny hit a single to score lead-off batter Josh Wettlaufer. The Mavericks kept their lead until the bottom of the third. Lance Koenig hit a double off the wall to score Matt Swope, evening the score at one. The next four innings went scoreless as both teams displayed their defensive talents. In the fourth inning Mike Arbinger made a diving catch on the right-field line to retire Mid-Missouri's Story-Harden. The Mavericks also stepped up the defensive pressure as the outfielders made a few diving catches of their own to stifle the Washington bats.

Wild Thing starting pitcher Brian Burks got the win as he went 7 1/3 innings, giving up one run, while striking out three. Jim Popp was brought in for the remainder of the game as he struck out two batters and did not surrender any runs. The eighth inning is when Washington stepped up and eventually took the lead. Chris Sidick stole second base and ended up advancing to third on an errant throw by the Mavericks. Sidick's steal proved vital to the Wild Things as he scored the winning run off of Pat O'Brien's single. O'Brien's single gave the Wild Things the lead at 2-1. Jim Popp ended the evening by striking out Thomas Bowker of the Mavericks and securing the Wild Things' 12th consecutive victory.

The Wild Things will be on the road for the next three days as they square off against the Chillicothe Paints at 7:05 p.m. Eastern time. Flagship WJPA 95.3 F.M. will broadcast the game.
