Simpson sets strikeout record
August 8, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
Andre Simpson struck out an Evansville Otters, single-game record 16 batters as the Otters defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 6-2.
The Otters put four on the board in the top of the first. With one out, Trask Munoz walked. Following a Jeff Goldbach strikeout, Beau Blacken singled, moving Munoz to third. David Gingrich then singled in his first AB as an Otter, scoring Munoz to give Evansville a 1-0 lead. Two pitches later, Mike Spry, in his first official at-bat as an Otter, rocked a homer over the right field fence and give Evansville a 4-0 lead.
Gateway wasted no time in coming back as Eric Sansouci singled and Shawn Smarsh homered to make it 4-2. The Otters got another run as John Coker scored on a wild pitch in the second inning to put the Otters up 5-2.
That would be the last run scored until Brian McKenna knocked home Blacken with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to give the Otters a 6-2 lead. Both pitchers were dominant in the contest as both Simpson and Nick Szczur had stretches where they retired 10 in a row.
As good as Szczur was, though, Simpson was better. The Evansville righty allowed just five hits over eight innings walking two. The 16 strikeouts broke the record set by George Sherrill in the 2000 Championship Series against the Johnstown Johnnies.
The Otters now return home for a 10 game homestand starting on Tuesday against the Florence Freedom. It is a Deaconess Hospital Two-for-Tuesday where fans can get a ticket for free with the purchase of a regular price ticket at the ticket window that night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
