Wild Things Rebound, Rip London 11-5

London, Ontario - The Wild Things got back on track, earning an 11-5 victory over the London Rippers. A solid outing from starter Eric Blackwell was backed by plenty of bats as the Wild Things took the second game of the three-game series.

The Rippers struck first in the bottom of the first inning. A two-out homerun by left fielder Joash Brodin gave London a 1-0 lead. It was Brodin's sixth homerun of the season.

Washington responded a couple innings later in the top of the third inning. A one-out walk to shortstop Matt McConnell was followed by a single from center fielder Robbie Garvey. Catcher Rick Devereaux and right fielder Allen Boyer recorded RBI's in the inning, and Devereaux added a run, making the score 3-1 in the third inning.

The starter for the Rippers, Matt Sommo, only lasted three innings on the mound. Sommo allowed three runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out two. The Wild Things were able to add eight more runs after Sommo left the game, making it a difficult night for the Rippers bullpen.

The Wild Things added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Garvey hit a two-run shot, scoring McConnell who had singled in the previous at-bat. Garvey's second homerun of the year extended the lead to 5-1. Washington recorded another run in the seventh inning, as McConnell recorded his third run scored in the game. Garvey and McConnell went a combined 5-for-9 on the night, recording three RBI's and five runs scored.

As the Wild Things got their bats going, Blackwell found his groove. After allowing a run in the first, Blackwell settled down, scattering only two more hits in his time on the mound. Blackwell finished with six innings of work, allowing one run on three hits and three walks. Blackwell also added seven strikeouts and earned his second win of the season.

London attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, recording two more runs in their effort. They also were able to get base runners in the bottom of the eight. They added two more runs in the inning, making the score 8-5 at the end of eight.

Washington was still not done, as they responded with three more runs in the ninth inning. A two-out single by pinch hitter Taylor Oldham drove in two runs to highlight the inning.

The Wild Things led 11-5 going into the bottom of the ninth, and reliever Steven Grife pitched a perfect ninth to end the game.

The Wild Things will look to finish off their nine-game road trip on a good note as they face the Rippers at 6:30 tomorrow night. The team returns home on Wednesday, June 20th, for a six-game home stand.
