Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- Long balls were the name of the game Monday night at Silver Cross Field, with four combined home runs. Joliet, however, was unable to snatch a victory as Traverse City broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth to win 5-3.

Picking up where they left off from Sunday, the Beach Bums got on board in the first. Kyle Colligan, who has reached base at least once in every game this season against Joliet, launched a solo home run to make it 1-0 early on. Later in the inning, Jose Vargas was hit by a pitch, reached second on a wild pitch from Slammers starter Tyler Ware, and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Down two runs, Joliet gained momentum in the fourth when Erik Lis belted a solo leadoff home run to put the game within one. In the next inning, however, Traverse City regained the insurance run on Colligan's second home run of the night, putting the score at 3-1.

But the Slammers weren't going down without a fight. They battled back in the sixth when Abel Nieves reached on an error, and Hector Pellot sent one barely over the left field wall to tie the game at three.

The Beach Bums provided the dagger in the ninth inning, courtesy of a Brian Heere double and a single from Vargas, giving the game its 5-3 final score.

In his first appearance as a Slammer, Tyler Ware tossed five innings, gave up three runs on seven hits, striking out and walking two. Chase Doremus provided middle relief, while Brian Smith entered in the eighth and suffered the loss, while Scott Dunn took the win.

The Slammers continue the six-game homestand Tuesday morning at 10:05 a.m. with the Bums to wrap up the series before Schaumburg visits for three games. If you can't make it to the game, fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
