Wild Things Fall to Crushers 11-7

Avon, OH- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell short after an exciting and hit filled game against the Lake Erie Crushers on Sunday with a final score of 11-7.

The Wild Things struck first with five runs in the top of the second inning started off by an RBI from Sam Montgomery to drive in Garrett Rau. Washington's bats got hot in the top of the second as the Wild Things added four more runs off of a Scott Kalamar grand slam and his first professional homerun. Kalamar drove in Daniel Poma, Maxx Garrett, and Sam Montgomery to make the score 5-0 Washington.

Another Wild Things batter picked up a career first in the top of the third as designated hitter Blaise Fernandez picked up his first RBI to drive in Carter Bell and extend Washington's lead to 6-0.

The Crushers picked up a pair runs in the bottom of the fourth off an error on a pickoff attempt by pitcher Zac Fuesser that allowed short stop Juan Sanchez to cross the plate. Before the Wild Things could end the inning, Adam Ford added an RBI single to bring around Ryan Hutchinson to make the score 6-2 in favor of Washington.

Lake Erie took the lead in the bottom on the fifth as the Crushers exploded for an eight run inning that was started off by Andrew Davis and Vincent Mejia as they hit back to back solo home runs. Ryan Hutchinson picked up two RBI's off a double and would later come around to score. Before the Wild Things could get out of the inning, the Crushers added three more runs to make the score 10-6 Crushers after five innings.

Daniel Poma made a top shelf play in the bottom of the seventh robbing Crushers Vincent Mejia of his second home run of the game and saving two more runs. Emmanuel Quiles was able to score off the fly ball, making the score 11-6.

Scott Kalamar picked up his fifth RBI of the game in the top of the eighth scoring Sam Montgomery to close the gap to 11-7.

The Wild Things will be back in action on Wednesday, July 2 for a double header against the Southern Illinois Miners. With the start of this series, it will begin a home stretch for the Wild Things that will feature 12 out of 15 games taking place at CONSOL Energy Park before the All-Star break.
