Aviators Win Series; Split Double-Header

CRESTWOOD, IL - The Rockford Aviators, presented by Pearson, won the series against the Windy City Thunderbolts, but split the double-header today as they won the first game 6-4 and lost the second game 4-7.
Game 1
As play resumed in the bottom of the first after being suspended the night before, Cole Green allowed two runs as the Thunderbolts tied the game up at two.
The score remained that way until the top of the fifth inning when Kalaika Kahoohalahala hit an RBI double that scored Mason Morioka to put the Aviators up 3-2.
Kahoohalahala had his best game of the season as he set career highs in runs, hits, and RBIs. He was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as he had a two-run blast in the seventh inning, his first long ball of the year, to give the Aviators a 6-2 lead. He would finish the game 3-5 with a double, a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
The Thunderbolts didn't give up the fight as they would score two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Mike Torres to cut the lead to 6-4.
Kyle Robinson of the Thunderbolts had a 20-game hit streak coming into this game and was 0-3 on the day before he was ejected in the eighth inning as he was coming to the plate. Robinson had been warned in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Perry Costello for arguing balls and strikes and the arguing continued into the eighth when Robinson was ejected thus ending his hit streak.
With the win, the Aviators improved back to .500 with an 18-18 record.
Game 2
The Aviators and the Thunderbolts went back and forth several times in this one as the lead changed hands four times with the Bolts coming out on top in the end by a score of 7-4.
David Wayne Russo got the start for the Aviators tonight, his first start of the season, as he earned a no-decision after throwing 2.1 innings and surrendered three runs on six hits while walking two batters and striking out three.
The Aviators trailed 3-2 heading into the fourth, but took the lead after the first three Aviators had hits to begin the inning as Kenny Bryant and Brian Bistagne would each score to give the Aviators a 4-3 lead.
However, the Bolts regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored two runs off of Kyle Hassna and they never looked back, eventually scoring two more insurance runs in the sixth to win 7-4.
The Aviators will return home on Tuesday night to open up a three game series against the Lake Erie Crushers. The Aviators are 1-2 against the Crushers this season having lost their last two games on walk-off hits.
The game on Tuesday night is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start and gates will open at 6:05 p.m. It will be Veterans Night at Aviators Stadium and all former and active-duty military will receive free admission to the game. It will also be Read Around the Bases Night and all kids who have completed the Read Around the Bases program will also receive free admission.
