Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

MARION, IL - Josh Miller hit a two-run, go-ahead double in the eighth inning and the Traverse City Beach Bums got four scoreless innings of relief as the Beach Bums closed out their road trip with a 5-4 win against the Southern Illinois Miners.

Trailing 4-3 entering the eighth, Rob Benedict led off with a single. After a flyout, Benedict stole second. Two batters later, a wild pitch advanced him to third. With first base open, Sean Gusrang was intentionally walked to bring up a right-on-right matchup between Miller and Miners' reliever James Bierlein. The battle went the Beach Bums way as on a 1-2 count, Miller ripped a double into right-centerfield to plate Benedict and pinch-runner Casey Roche, putting TC up 5-4.

Will Rankin (2-2) picked up the win in relief, tossing a pair of scoreless innings. After Traverse City took the lead in the top of the eighth, D. J. Johnson came on in the bottom of the inning and retired all six batters he faced to close out his 11th save of the season. Bierlein (2-2) took the loss for Southern Illinois.

The Beach Bums jumped in front as early as possible as Greg Harisis led off the game with his first professional homerun against Miners' starter Michael Carden. Traverse City would use the long ball against Carden again in the fifth as Kevin Taylor led off the inning with a single and moved to third before Jeff DeBlieux clocked his second big fly of the year to make it 3-0 TC.

Southern Illinois battled back scoring a pair of runs each in the fifth and sixth before Miller's late heroics.

Offensively, Miller, George Barber, and Jake Rhodes each had two hits. Miller and DeBlieux drove in a pair each.

The Beach Bums now have a day off before starting a six-game homestand against the River City Rascals. Tuesday is a Two-for-Tuesday and Take A Kid To The Game Night. In addition to getting two tickets for the price of one, fans can help make a memory to last a lifetime by bringing a kid to the game. Gates open at 6:00 pm in front of a 7:05 first pitch. Fans who can't make it to the contest can catch all the action on Classic Rock The Bear with the pregame show starting at 6:45 pm. For tickets call 231-943-0100 or visit www.tcbeachbums.com.
