Washington Wild Things News Release
John Delaney and Joel Hartman combined to go 7 for 9 and Justin Edwards pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, beat the Florence Freedom 9-7 Saturday night at Champion Window Field in Florence Kentucky.
Both teams traded big innings and the lead through the first seven innings. Washington scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second but for the second consecutive night could not hold a three-plus run lead. Florence posted two-run second and sixth innings and scored three times in the fourth.
All-star Chris Sidick fueled a three-run top of the fifth inning and broke a 5-5 tie with a single scoring Joel Hartman and Billy O'Conner. Sidick had two hits and three RBIs for Washington.
The Wild Things added insurance runs in the top of the eighth when Mark McGonigle singled home Michael Parker to give Washington the 9-7 lead.
Delaney doubled home all-star Parker in the bottom of the first and McGonigle later scored Delaney from third with a sacrifice fly to left to give Washington a 2-0 lead. Delaney finished with four hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
Florence starter Tim Holmes and Wild Things starter Tim Smith pitched similar games through four innings. Both allowed five runs, with Smith allowing six hits and three walks and Holmes seven hits and two walks.
Holmes was pulled the next inning after allowing two more hits and three runs, finishing with three walks and three strike outs over 4.2 innings. Delaney finished 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored and Hartman 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Eryk McConnell earned his tenth save and second of the series.
