Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, (33-36) presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, were able to avoid the sweep and sent the Lake Erie Crushers packing by the score of 7-1 at Consol Energy Park.

The Crushers threw the first blow in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun by designated hitter Gordon Gronkowski to give them the early 1-0 lead. Wasting no time in the bottom half of the inning, Matt Sutton evened the score at 1-1 with a solo shot of his own (11).

After a leadoff walk to Michael Parker in the third inning and a bunt single by Chris Sidick, Jacob Dempsey drove them in with a RBI single to make the score 3-1. After a long at bat from Crusher pitcher Jorge Charry to Grant Psomas, Psomas got the best of him with a RBI single of his own to plate Dempsey and give the Wild Things a 4-1 lead. An eighth inning Josh Blackstock double scored Alan Robbins and a two-run single by Ernie Banks secured the victory at 7-1.

Wild Things starter Zach Groh had an impressive performance on route to his fourth victory of the year (4-3). Groh went nine innings striking out a career high 10 batters, while surrendering only six hits and one run.

The Wild Things go to battle with the Kalamazoo Kings on Friday night here at Consol Energy Park. Friday's game will be another Fireworks Friday sponsored by Zambelli. Tickets are still available at our box office. Broadcast on WJPA 95.3 FM begins at 6:55 with the first pitch coming at 7:05.
