Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Washington, PA - The Lake Erie Crushers had no answers for the pitching of Washington right-hander Zach Groh as the Wild Things avoided a sweep at the hands of the Crushers with a 7-1 win on Thursday evening at Consol Energy Park.
Groh went eight innings, allowing just a run on six hits and struck out a season-high ten batters. The only run the Crushers could manage was a solo home run by Gordon Gronkowski in the second inning that temporarily gave Lake Erie a 1-0 lead. The shot to right was Gronkowski's team-leading 15th homer of the season.
Washington tied the game in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homer to left by outfielder Matt Sutton. The Wild Things would seize command of the game in the third inning against Jorge Charry as Jacob Dempsey delivered a two-run single and Grant Psomas added an RBI single to give Washington a 4- 1 lead.
Charry would go five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. He is now 0-5 on the season.
Any hopes the Crushers had to come from behind vanished in the eighth inning as the Wild Things put the game out of reach with a pair of two-out hits off of Shannon Sprouse. Josh Blackstock hit an RBI double and Ernie Banks added a two-run single to close the scoring and give Washington the win, ending their four game losing streak. The loss for Lake Erie ends their four game winning streak.
The Crushers are now 39-29 on the season and will start up a seven-game homestand on Friday with a doubleheader against the Midwest Sliders. Game 1 will start at 5:30 and will be a nine inning matchup, followed by a seven inning battle in game two.
