Bolts Sweep Grizzlies

CRESTWOOD, IL-The Windy City ThunderBolts scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday night, breaking a 5-5 tie, and giving the ThunderBolts a three-game sweep of the Gateway Grizzlies at Standard Bank Stadium. The Grizzlies have now dropped a season-high five straight.

Kraig Binick led off the ninth with a single to right. Binick then stole second and went to third when Jonathan Quigley's throw went into center field. He scored on a sacrifice fly Guillermo Martinez. Joel Boeschen suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. He allowed the unearned run on the single hit over 1.1 innings.

Windy City (40-29) maintained sole possession of first place in the West Division with the win. The Grizzlies (27-41) committed a season-high six errors, but nearly avoided the sweep.

Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, the Gateway managed two runs on three hits. Brandon Johnson led off the inning with a bunt base-hit, stole second and scored on a single by Brandon Peters. Joe Agreste followed with a ground-rule double to center to move Peters to third, he scored on a wild pitch to even the score at three.

Gilberto Mejia and Robert Perry hit back-to-back homers to start the bottom of the inning to put Windy City back on top 5-3. The homers came off Grizzlies starter Christian Castorri. Castorri tossed 6.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned. He struck out four.

The Grizzlies answered again in the eighth inning. Joseph Scaperotta led off the inning with a single. Jareck West followed with a two-run home run to center to tie the game 5-5. West was 1-4 with the l long ball, his sixth of the year.

Peters led off the ninth inning with a single, his fourth hit of the game. Pinch-hitting Alex Kerins moved Peters to second with a sacrifice bunt. He advanced to third on a one-out passed ball. Chad Rothford and Charlie Lisk both struck out against Windy City reliever Nick Hall to end the game.

Peters was 4-5 with the RBI and two runs scored. Scaperotta was 2-4. Joe Agreste was also 2-4 for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies begin a three-game series at GCS Ballpark Friday night. First pitch against the Evansville Otters is 7:05 pm.
