Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY -After taking their first lead of the series with a three run third inning, the Florence Freedom led the Kalamazoo Kings all the way until the eighth inning, but Deston Makonnen clubbed a three run homer to cap off a five run eighth as the Kings won 6-3.
Everett Saul allowed only one unearned run for the Freedom through seven innings. Entering the eighth, the right-hander was sitting on 100 pitches. With a 3-1 lead, Saul allowed a lead-off single followed by two walks to load the bases.
Manager Toby Rumfield came to the mound but decided to leave him in. A sacrifice fly and RBI single later, the Kings tied the game at three.
Saul left and Jimmy Stanley came in. Makonnen was the first man Stanley faced and with two men on, the designated hitter stroked the game winning hit over the right field wall for a three-run dinger. It was Makonnen's second game winning homer against the Freedom this season as he hit a walk-off blast on June 18 in the bottom of the twelfth inning.
Saul (9-5) finished with the loser, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, four earned with seven strikeouts.
Florence put up all three runs in the third inning off Kings' starter Carson Bryant. Justin Pickett walked with the bases loaded to score the first run. Jay Johnson scored on a past ball and Billy Mottram knocked in Erold Andrus with a sacrifice fly to put the Freedom up 3-1.
Scott Reid (2-0) came in for Kalamazoo and tossed 4 1/3 innings without giving a run for the win. Tommy Mejia closed out the game in the ninth to pick up his fourteenth save of the season.
Kalamazoo's bullpen went 6 1/3 innings without giving up a run. The Kings left town with an 8-1 season series edge on the Freedom as they handed Florence its eighth straight defeat.
Florence (31-37) does get to host the Traverse City Beach Bums for their next three games starting Friday night. The Freedom swept the Beach Bums July 26-28 at Champion Window Field.
Friday's are Fox 19 Fireworks Fridays with post game Rozzi's Fireworks. For tickets, call the Freedom at (859) 594-HITS or visit FlorenceFreedom.com.
