Clinton LumberKings News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Three run scoring wild pitches were too much for the Clinton LumberKings to overcome in a 6-5 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night Dow Diamond. The LumberKings (17-8, 50-44) loss brought to an end a three-game winning streak.
Great Lakes (14-11, 57-35) started their scoring early with two runs across in the bottom of the first. LumberKings starter Tanner Andrews allowed the first two men to reach with Chris Roller chasing home the first run on an RBI double into the left field corner. Two batters later, Roller scored on the first-of-three run scoring wild pitches Andrews threw.
The score remained unchanged until the LumberKings broke out for three runs in the top of the fourth. Christopher Torres tripled to open the inning, Clinton's first hit of the night, and scored when the next batter Peyton Burdick doubled off Jose Chachin. A pair of Loons errors ended the inning and brought home the final two runs of the rally.
The LumberKings only lead of the night did not last long as the Loons tied the score in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Great Lakes edged ahead with a run in the bottom of the sixth following a Luke Heyer leadoff triple and run scoring wild pitch.
Chachin (8-6) earned the win for the Loons with a five-inning outing of relief. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking none and striking out one.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Loons took the lead for good with a two-run rally off LumberKings reliever Cam Baird. The runs were enough to hang Baird (1-1) with the loss. He turned in 2.1 innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits while walking none and striking out three.
Clinton made things interesting in the ninth with a Davis Bradshaw RBI double that put the tying run into scoring position at second base before Sam Castro struck out to end the game.
Justin Hangenman earned the save for Great Lakes for his ninth inning work - his third of the year.
The LumberKings will meet the Great Lakes Loons for the second game of their three-game series on Thursday night. Clinton will throw righty Alberto Guerrero (4-4, 2.51) while Great Lakes will tap lefty Robinson Ortiz (1-4, 5.53). First pitch is scheduled for 6:06 p.m. (SDT). Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas with the pregame show on 5:50 p.m. with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI or online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio app.
