EASTLAKE, OHIO - Spencer Steer and Jared Akins were responsible for all five Cedar Rapids Kernels runs within a 5-4 win Wednesday against the Lake County Captains at Classic Park. Tyler Palm tossed a quality start and earned the victory for the Kernels (15-10, 54-41) to start this three-game series at the Captains (14-11, 54-40).

Steer scored the go-ahead run in the first inning before driving in an insurance run during the second inning for a 2-0 Kernels lead. He hit a leadoff single to open the game and later came home via wild pitch. In the next inning, Steer's RBI groundout plated Tyler Webb.

Lake County tallied its first run during the third. A two-out error extended the frame and loaded the bases for Daniel Schneemann, and he produced a run-scoring single to drive in Miguel Jerez and slice the deficit to 2-1.

Akins launched Cedar Rapids to a 5-1 advantage in the seventh. With two runners aboard, two outs, and a 2-2 count, Akins belted a three-run home run to right field. His 10th round-tripper overall put him in a tie for the team lead with Chris Williams.

Palm (2-5) notched his third consecutive quality start within a winning appearance. Palm posted a game-high-tying six strikeouts while surrendering just one unearned run. He worked with lead during all six of his innings pitched.

The Captains rallied in the ninth but fell one run short. Carlos Suniaga inherited a one-out, bases-loaded jam and started with a strikeout. Back-to-back RBI singles from Ruben Cardenas and Jose Fermin allowed all three inherited runners to score. Suniaga bounced back with another strikeout and picked up his second save of the season.

Luis Oviedo (6-6) was the losing pitcher in Wednesday's series opener. He conceded two runs over 3.2 innings pitched. Ovideo matched Palm with six total strikeouts.

A Thursday matinée at 11:00 a.m. ET (10:00 a.m. CT) will represent the middle meeting of this three-game series between the Kernels and the Captains. Cedar Rapids right-hander Luis Rijo (2-6, 2.37) is slated to pitch against Lake County southpaw Eli Lingos (2-0, 3.14). Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will have the call online at www.kmryradio.com and www.kernels.com.
