Wild Pitch Hands 'Cakes Walk-Off Win
July 19, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
A wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning brought in the game-winning run for the New Orleans Baby Cakes, who defeated the Round Rock Express, 6-5 on Friday night.
After R.J. Alvarez (2-6) retired Round Rock in order in the top of the 10th to keep the game tied, Isan Diaz was given an intentional walk with two outs in the bottom half and Lewis Brinson worked a walk to load the bases. Colin McKee's first pitch to Deven Marrero skipped past Jamie Ritchie to the backstop for a wild pitch to score Gabriel Guerrero from third, giving New Orleans its fourth walk-off victory and second via a wild pitch.
The Baby Cakes jumped in front after just two batters, as Magneuris Sierra ended a 10-pitch battle with a leadoff single and went to third when the ball scooted past right fielder Derek Fisher for a two-base error. Eddy Alvarez followed by roping a single to center to score Sierra and stretch his hitting streak to 15 games, tied for the longest active streak in the Pacific Coast League.
Tyler Heineman and Isaac Galloway homered on consecutive pitches leading off the second inning to give the 'Cakes a 3-0 edge. It was the sixth time this season New Orleans has hit back-to-back home runs.
Joshua Rojas got Round Rock on the board with a two-run blast in the third inning, but Isan Diaz answered with a two-run shot of his own in the fifth. With his fourth homer in the last six games, Diaz upped his season total to 24, a career best and tied for fourth-most in the PCL.
The Express came back with three runs in the sixth to even the score. Jack Mayfield led off the frame with a home run, and three straight singles led to a pair of runs, capped by Alex DeGoti's sacrifice fly.
Tyler Kinley and Jeff Brigham combined to retire 10 in a row after relieving 'Cakes starter Joe Gunkel, but Round Rock's pitching countered by setting down 14 of 15 to send the game into extra innings.
The teams play the middle game of the three-game set on Saturday at 6 p.m.
