Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Memphis starter Rich Hill improved to 5-0 lifetime against Omaha, limiting the Royals to one run in six effectively wild innings as the Redbirds won 6-4 Saturday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Hill issued six walks, but also served up three double play grounders in a 104-pitch season debut.
Only 56 of Hill's pitches were for strikes, but he held the Royals to one hit over five scoreless innings before giving up a run on two hits, including David Lough's RBI double to right-center with two outs in the sixth. That run snapped an 18-inning scoreless streak for the Royals over their last two games. Hill rebounded to strike out Jordan Parraz, stranding Royals at second and third to preserve a 3-1 lead and end the Memphis starter's night.
Two errors by Memphis shortstop Tyler Greene allowed the Royals to score an unearned run in the seventh and two unearned runs in the ninth. However, Jon Jay doubled and scored for the Redbirds in the eighth to make it a 4-2 score and his two-run double to right in the ninth gave Memphis the insurance they needed for a 6-2 advantage.
Royals second baseman Marc Maddox, who cut the Redbirds' lead to 3-2 with an RBI single in the seventh, had another run-scoring hit with two outs in the ninth to make it 6-3. Wilson Betemit followed with an RBI single to trim the deficit to 6-4 and bring the potential winning run to the plate. However, Kila Ka'aihue struck out swinging at Pete Parise's 3-2 curve ball to end the game.
Omaha starter Bruce Chen took the loss, yielding three runs on seven hits over five-and-two-thirds innings, walking two and striking out six. A crowd of 3,031 fans attended the contest, the first 1,500 of which received a free Royals retro cap, courtesy of Werner Enterprises.
Memphis, which leads the four-game series 2-1, visits Rosenblatt for a 1:35 p.m. game on Sunday. Right-hander Adam Ottavino takes the hill for the Redbirds, while former St. Louis Cardinals righty Brad Thompson will make his Omaha debut.
