Iowa Cubs News Release

On Saturday night the Nashville Sounds prevailed over the Iowa Cubs 2-1 in ten innings. It was Iowa's third straight loss to Nashville to begin the season, as the Cubs' offense remained stagnant early in the 2010 campaign. The game was played on a brisk evening at Principal Park in front of a crowd of 6,606.

Ray Olmedo notched a one-out triple for the Sounds in the first inning, and he was immediately knocked in on a single by Trent Oeltjen to make it a 1-0 game in favor of Nashville.

With the game still at 1-0, the Sounds mounted a scoring threat in the top half of the eighth inning by loading the bases with no outs against Cubs' reliever, Jeff Stevens. He was replaced by Jeff Gray who was able to get out of the jam unscathed. He struck out Adam Heether looking, and got Ben Johnson to ground into a one-two-three double play to end the inning.

After mustering only three hits in the first seven innings, the Cubs' offense finally came alive in their half of the eighth. Pinch hitter Matt Camp hit a one-out single, followed by a Jim Adduci double to put runners on second and third with one out. Bobby Scales grounded out to short, scoring Camp, and tying the game at one.

The Sounds broke the tie in the top of the tenth. Ray Olmedo led the inning off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Brendan Katin then singled in Olmedo, making it a 2-1 game. The Cubs got one base runner in the bottom of the tenth, but it was all for naught.

Thomas Diamond got the start tonight, making his Iowa Cubs debut. After a shaky first inning, Diamond settled in nicely, only allowing three base runners through the next four innings.

Mitch Atkins (0-1, 3.00) took the loss for the Cubs while John Axford (1-0, 0.00) picked up the win. Chris Smith notched his second save of the season for the Sounds.

The Cubs and Sounds will play the finale of a four game set tomorrow Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Probable starters are RH Casey Coleman for the Cubs and LH Chris Waters for the Sounds.
