Wiens Plays OT Hero in 200th Career Game

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

After 200 games, you could forgive Jayden Wiens if his individual contests in the WHL blended together. He'll almost certainly remember this one though.

Wiens scored the overtime winner and the Wheat Kings downed the Regina Pats 5-4. Rylen Roersma scored twice, while Matteo Michels and Brett Hyland also scored in the win.

"There were lots of ups and downs for 60 minutes," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "I thought we started pretty well. Even though we were down 1-0, we had a lot of good looks early. I thought for a stretch of ten minutes in the first and a good part of the second, we didn't manage the pucks, we had a lot of turnovers at the blueline."

The Pats ended a 23-for-23 run for the Wheat Kings on the penalty kill with their first of the game. Borya Valis broke up the right side and fed Sam Oremba, who swatted it home.

Though it wouldn't go as a power play goal, Roersma's tally came just as a power play expired and got the Wheat Kings back to a 1-1 tie. Waiting patiently as he walked off the wall, Roersma picked his spot and sniped home the tying tally.

Regina's power play again provided their answer, as Valis and Oremba connected again, this time with Valis selling the shot before sending Oremba a back door tap in. Then, at 5-on-5, Braxton Whitehead picked up the rebound of a broken odd-man rush and lifted it home for the 3-1 Pats advantage.

In the third, the Wheat Kings pushed back relentlessly. It started shorthanded, with Michels rocketing ahead of the pack and sniping home his second as a Wheat King. Then, Hyland came off the bench and leaned into a one-timer after taking a pass from Nolan Flamand to tie the game.

The Wheat Kings took their first lead of the night when Dominik Petr fed Roersma in the crease and he steered home the pass to make it 4-3. With just 2:04 to go, however, Regina fought back and Tye Spencer re-tied the game.

Overtime would see the Wheat Kings get the last laugh. After being stopped on his first attempt, Wiens tried a second shot from the right circle, sniping home this one for the game winner.

With the win, the Wheat Kings take sole possession of third place in the WHL's Eastern Conference. They'll begin their defense of third on Friday, December 29 as they host the Saskatoon Blades.
