Warriors Set for Start of Second Half on Friday
December 28, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Heading into the second half of the Western Hockey League season, consistency is the key word for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Warriors entered the Christmas break sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference with an 18-14-0-2 record, while it's a strong start, the team is looking for more in the second half.
"[The first half] wasn't bad, but it wasn't up to our standards," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said after practice on Wednesday.
"There was obviously games that we gave away that we weren't happy about, but the second half, our goal is to not give those games away against teams we should beat."
Moose Jaw finished the first half with a win in Brandon, but had dropped the previous five games, including a few to teams below them in the standings.
Firkus said that can't happen heading into the final 34 games of the regular season.
"You have to have the same mentality against every team," he said. "It doesn't matter which team, if they're top of the standings or bottom, you have to have the same mentality and if you play like that, you'll be successful."
The 68-game regular season is a process, while every game is important, 20-year-old defenceman Lucas Brenton said the focus is to grow and learn as the season progresses.
"We're working towards being a great team here and we've started the process and we just got to keep on going," Brenton said.
"The playoffs are when the games really matter, so every day is just building towards that. I feel like we're a group of guys that likes to play in those big situation games, so we're just getting ready for it."
The Warriors will start the second half with a battle against the Regina Pats on Friday night at the Hangar.
Firkus said he couldn't think of a better opponent to open the second half against.
"It's important for this weekend to start off on the right note," he said.
The Warriors and Pats meet at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Friday at 7 p.m.
