Nash's Hat-Trick Powers Oil Kings to Win in Prince George
December 28, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Prince George, BC - The Edmonton Oil Kings opened their seven-game road trip on Wednesday night with an entertaining 6-4 win over the Prince George Cougars at the CN Centre.
The Oil Kings showed no rust from their 10-day holiday break as they raced out to a 4-0 lead through 20 minutes of play thanks to a first period hat-trick from Ty Nash.
Nash opened the scoring just 2:10 into the game after Cole Miller ripped a shot from the right-circle off Cougars goaltender Josh Ravensbergen that then bounced off of Nash and a Cougars defenceman and over the shoulder of Ravensbergen.
Marshall Finnie added to the Edmonton lead just over five minutes later as he pounced on a turnover in front of the Prince George net, snapped a shot towards the goal but had it pinball off a Cougars defenceman right back to him and on his follow up chance beat Ravensbergen over the blocker for his 11th of the season.
Midway through the first period, the Cougars received a lengthy two-man advantage, but the Oil Kings penalty killers were able to keep the league's best power play at bay.
Late in the first period, the Oil Kings received a pair of power plays of their own and made the Cougars pay as Nash picked up his second of the period after having his backdoor pass blocked, it came right back to him and he was able to muscle it under the left-pad of Ravensbergen.
Just 90 seconds later, Nash completed his hat-trick, the first of his WHL career, after Skyler Bruce spotted him at the backdoor with a perfect pass that he lasered to the back of the net.
In the second period, the Cougars would score the only two goals of the frame to halve the Edmonton lead at the second intermission.
Matteo Danis got the Cougars on the board 9:42 into the middle stanza as he snuck in a short-side shot from the bottom of the left circle.
Riley Heidt made it a 4-2 game with 1:33 left in the period after he deposited a bouncing puck at the side of the Edmonton net on a Prince George power play.
In the third period, Gavin Hodnett increased the Edmonton lead to 5-2 just 3:41 with a power play goal that he filtered through Ty Young from the left circle.
The Cougars were able to get a couple of goals back to pull to within one Aiden Foster and Oren Shtrom each finding the back of the net before the period was 10 minutes old.
The Oil Kings would snuff out any thoughts of a Cougars comeback though with just over a minute left as Adam Jecho put in an empty-netter for his ninth goal of the season.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 24 saves, while Ravensbergen and Young combined for 19 for the Cougars. Edmonton went 3-for-4 on the power play, Prince George was 1-for-3.
Next up, the Oil Kings continue their road trip on Friday night when they battle the Vancouver Giants at 8:00 P.M. MT. You can catch all the action on the Oil Kings Radio Network, iHeartRadio Canada.
