Stone Cold Stunner
If you weren't tuned in to all 60+ minutes of last night's game, oh boy did you miss a show! Trailing Tri-City 5-3 in the final moments of the game, the Winterhawks tallied twice to tie the game with goals from Diego Buttazzoni and Jack O'Brien, then netted a beautiful game-winner through Marcus Nguyen in overtime for the 6-5 victory.
The win also saw Nick Avakyan pick up the win in his first game against his former club, and Tyson Jugnauth grabbed his first WHL goal amidst an impressive three-point showing. Now, after one of the most thrilling wins of the year, the Hawks return to home ice looking to build momentum against their biggest rival.
Selling Seattle
The T-Birds have hit a few speed bumps through the first half of the season, and enter tonight's tilt with a new look after swinging a massive trade with Edmonton yesterday. Seattle sent star forward and Florida Panthers prospect Gracyn Sawchyn and the playing rights of his younger brother Lukas to the Oil Kings for forward Nathan Pilling and a healthy handful of draft picks. At just 18, Sawchyn likely has a bit of runway left in the WHL before turning pro, but Seattle needed to restock their draft cupboards after selling out for last season's championship.
Still, the T-Birds remain dangerous with four other NHL-drafted players and a collection of up-and-coming rookie talent. But injuries to other stars have piled up for Seattle, and Portland, already 2-0-0-0 in the season series, will be keen to capitalize on their rival's rebuild. Look for a fast start from the hosts as they seek the upper hand early against their I-5 foes.
Red Sweater Szn
Jersey colors have flipped for the second half of the season, and dark sweaters are IN on home ice from here on out! Tonight's attire is red, a uniform that's been good to the Hawks this season with wins in both games they have been worn.
