Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they have signed infielder Yeurys Tejeda (6-1, 150).

He takes the roster spot of starting pitcher Stephen Whalen (6-2, 205, University of New Orleans), who was deactivated on Wednesday and is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL and torn meniscus in his left knee while backing up home plate in Amarillo on Tuesday.

A 22-year old out of Bani, Dominican Republic, Tejeda is a career-.230 hitter in four seasons in the Washington Nationals' farm system. He played in the Dominican Summer League in 2006 and 2007 before splitting the last two seasons between the rookie-level Gulf Coast League and Vermont (New York-Penn League, Class A Short-Season). In 184 games, Tejeda has hit 12 home runs while driving in 96 runs. He has also stolen 30 bases in 37 attempts.

Whalen was 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA. In four starts, he struck out 22 in 18.2 innings. Andres Rosales (6-0, 214) is expected to start in Whalen's spot today.
