San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - A 13-run first inning proved to be the difference Saturday night at Foster Field as the Colts defeated the White Wings in a wild 17-14 ballgame.
The game got underway in an astonishing fashion as the teams combined for 17 runs in the first inning. The White Wings started things off with a three-run homer from first baseman Salvador Paniagua (8) to make the score 3-0. Rio Grande added another run with an RBI single from rightfielder Arlon Quiroz to give the White Wings a 4-0 lead.
That's when the Colts responded with 13 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the first. The scoring started with an RBI single from second baseman Mark Ramos to cut the Rio Grande lead to 4-1. Two batters later, designated hitter Jason Landreth blasted a three-run homer (4) to tie the game. Three batters after that, third baseman Landon Camp picked up his first homer as a Colt with a two-run shot to give San Angelo a 6-4 lead. Ramos then picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk to give the Colts a three lead. That set the stage for first baseman Josh Collazo who smashed his second grandslam of the week, and his third homer of the year, to make the score 11-4.
San Angelo wasn't done however as they added RBI doubles from leftfielder Jason Crosland and Camp to give the Colts a nine-run lead a 13-4. The first inning lasted 70 minutes, which was two minutes longer than the longest inning in Major League history between the Rangers and Tigers on May 8, 2004. There were 117 pitches thrown in the inning and 25 at-bats. The White Wings had to use three different hurlers as the first two lasted only 0.1 of an inning each.
The White Wings made a comeback by scoring the games next seven runs. Leftfielder Domenic Di Ricco singled in a run and Paniagua drew a bases-loaded walk as part of a two-run second inning to made the score 13-6. Rio Grande added another run in the third on a passed ball to draw to within six runs. They added three more in the fifth on a three-run homer by Jose Sanchez (2) to dwindle the Colts lead to 13-10. The White Wings picked up another run in the sixth on a solo homerun by catcher Kevin Griffin (4) as San Angelo's lead was cut to 13-11.
San Angelo gained some insurance in the bottom of the sixth on RBI doubles from centerfielder Ronnie Gaines and Ramos to push the Colts' lead to 15-11. But the White Wings came back in the seventh with two runs of their own on a sacrifice fly from Di Ricco and an RBI single from Paniagua to make the score 15-13 Colts.
Rio Grande would get to within one run in the eighth on a two-out, bases loaded single by centerfielder Javis Diaz, but a great throw to the plate by Gaines and a tremendous tag by catcher Trey Carter kept the tying run from scoring.
San Angelo scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run triple by Ramos to give the Colts the final tally of 17-14. Closer Mike Hacker struck out third baseman Eric Gonzalez with two men on to end the game and pick up the save, his third of the season.
For the game, Ramos went 4-4 with two singles, a double, a triple, five RBI and two runs scored. Camp went 2-5 with a homer, a double and three RBI to aid the Colts' cause. Paniagua led the way for the White Wings by going 3-4 with a homer, two singles and five RBI.
Bryan Heaston (1-0) got the win in relief for the Colts by pitching three innings and giving up three runs. Starter Misael DeJesus (0-2) took the loss after giving up seven earned runs in 0.1 innings of work in the first. The game lasted four hours and nine minutes, the longest time of the season.
The Colts and White Wings will square off in game three of their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 6:05. Chandler Barnard (0-1, 6.75 ERA) will go for San Angelo against Andres Rosales (1-1, 5.28 ERA) of the White Wings. In honor of Father's Day, the Colts will have their Father's Day Extravaganza presented by HEB. The game can be heard on 1260 KKSA, with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things started at 5:50.
