
Late Rally Falls Short for WhiteWings

San Angelo - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored three runs in the top of the ninth and sent the tying run to the plate, but lost to the San Angelo Colts 10-8 Sunday at Foster Field.
Down 10-5, Javis Diaz was hit by a pitch by Michael Hacker and Kevin Dietrich came up with a pinch-hit single. Two outs alter, Kevin Griffin and Eric Gonzalez hit RBI-singles and Griffin scored on a wild pitch. Joel Roa came up as the tying run at the plate, but grounded out to end the game.
The Colts (11-14) scored an unearned run against Andres Rosales (1-1) in the bottom of the first. Ronnie Gaines reached on an error, and after back-to-back singles, Jason Landreth was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Josh Collazo led off the bottom of the third with a walk, and two outs later scored on an RBI-single by Jason Crosland to make it 2-0.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Gaines reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Mark Ramos to make it 3-0.
Chandler Barnard (1-1) allowed two hits to the WhiteWings (13-12) through the first four innings. With one out in the top of the fifth, Joel Roa was hit by a pitch and Jose Sanchez hit his third home run of the season. Yeurys Tejeda reached on an error, and one out later, Domenic Di Ricco hit an RBI-double to tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the inning, Landreth led off with a single. One out later Crosland singled and Landon Camp hit an RBI-single. Trey Carter followed by lining out third. Eric Gonzalez tried to double Camp of off first, but threw the ball away, allowing Crosland to score. Camp later scored on a single by Gaines to make it 6-3.
Roa led off the top of the seventh with a single. One out later, Tejeda doubled and Diaz hit a ground-rule double to drive in two runs, making it 6-5.
Landreth hit a three-run home run, his fourth, and Crosland hit a solo home run, his league-lead tying eight of the season, against Jose Fulgencio in the top of the eighth, to put the game out of reach.
The WhiteWings and Colts complete this four game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Greg Conrad (0-1) is expected to face right-hander Ezequiel Astacio (3-2).
