Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
San Angelo - Down 13-4 after one inning, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings got within one run late before falling to the San Angelo Colts 17-14 Saturday at Foster Field.
The Colts (10-14) sent 17 men to the plate in the first inning and hit three home runs. The first eight hitters came up against Misael DeJesus (0-2), who recorded one out while allowing an RBI-single to Mark Ramos, a three-run home run to Jason Landreth, a two-run home run to Landon Camp and a walk to Trey Carter before getting pulled. Miguel Matos gave up back-to-back singles, walked in a run and then allowed a grand slam to Josh Collazo. Landreth walked, and one out later, Jason Crosland and Camp hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to knock out Matos and cap the inning.
The WhiteWings (13-11) had a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the first after Salvador Paniagua hit his league-leading eighth home run of the season, a three-run shot off of Alex Morales, and Eric Gonzalez hit an RBI-single.
The WhiteWings started chipping away in the second by loading the bases with nobody out. Paniagua walked to force in a run and knock out Morales. Gorman Romero (1-0) got Joel Roa to ground into a double play as Diaz scored, making it 13-6.
Gonzalez led off the third with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to make it 13-7.
Jose Sanchez hit a three-run home run, his second of the season, to bring the WhiteWings within 13-10 in the fifth.
Kevin Griffin hit a solo home run against Bryan Heaston, his fourth of the season, to bring the WhiteWings within 13-11 in the top of the sixth.
The Colts got back on the board in the bottom of the inning against Jason Moody. With Carter at second base and two outs, Ronnie Gaines and Ramos hit back-to-back doubles to make it 15-11.
That was it against Moody, who struck out four in five innings while allowing four hits and two walks.
Domenic Di Ricco hit a sacrifice fly and Paniagua hit an RBI-single in the top of the seventh to bring the WhiteWings within 15-13.
The WhiteWings loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the eighth against Chace Vacek. Javis Diaz hit a single to score Griffin, but Sanchez was thrown out at the plate as the WhiteWings climbed within 15-14.
The Colts added a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run triple by Ramos off of Michael Barbosa to make it 17-14.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Roa and Arlon Quiroz singled to bring Gonzalez up as the tying run at the plate, but Michael Hacker struck him out swinging for his third save of the season.
The WhiteWings and Colts play game three of this four game series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Andres Rosales (1-1) is expected to face right-hander Chandler Barnard (0-1).
