WhiteWings Fall Behind Early, Lose Big 12-3

June 10, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

A big first inning and a solid pitching performance from Logan Williamson delivered the San Angelo Colts a decisive 12-3 win.

With San Angelo's Ronnie Gaines leading off the game with a solo home run off of WhiteWings' pitcher Andy Wells, the homestanding Colts went up 1-0 just three pitches into the ballgame. Three hits later, the Colts bumped their first-inning lead up to a 4-0 advantage as they never looked back from there.

With Logan Williamson delivering seven strong innings and allowing just four hits, the WhiteWings were never able to crawl back into the game.

A big four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth would give San Angelo an 8-2 lead as Wells was pulled with just 3.2 innings of work.

Wells, who had entered the night's game with just a 1.47 ERA, allowed five earned runs tonight as his record dropped to 2-1 on the year.

The WhiteWings would tack on runs in the second and fourth inning thanks to two extra base hits by newcomer Francisco Santana. Second baseman Brandon Decker brought him home in the second while Carl Johnson knocked in an RBI single in the fourth.

The two runs for the WhiteWings were all they could muster on Williamson.

Delivering in the fifth with another solo blast from Gaines and two more runs in the sixth, San Angelo put on three more runs on WhiteWings' relief pitching, making the score 11-2 in favor of the Colts.

Leivi Ventura would add another run in the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence, but that would do it for the WhiteWings bats.

Gaines would knock in an eighth-inning RBI to bring home Trey Carter to make the final score 12-3.

Williamson, with his strong performance, advances to 3-0 on the year.

The WhiteWings fall to 12-5 on the year and San Angelo improves to 8-9.

The WhiteWings play game two of their four-game series against San Angelo on Saturday night at 7:30 PM. Chase Davenport (1-2, 5.40 ERA) is expected to start.
