Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Veteran Major League pitcher Albie Lopez earned his first victory of the season and the home team hit three home runs as the Edmonton Capitals doubled up on the Lake County Fielders 8-4 on Thursday night at TELUS Field to snap a three-game losing skid.
The Caps improved to 7-5 on the young North American League season with the victory, snapping Lake County's six-game winning streak and closing the gap to 2.5 games behind the North Division-leading Fielders, who are now 10-3 on the year.
Centre fielder Todd Linden and catcher Lou Santangelo had huge offensive games for the Caps. Linden, who has MLB experience with the San Francisco Giants and Florida Marlins, went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, while Santangelo, who played Triple-A with the Houston Astros organization, went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Shortstop Enrique Cruz was the third Edmonton player to go deep, smacking his second homer of the season.
Lopez, who's played 297 career MLB games and won a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, tossed five innings and scattered four runs on six hits while striking out four Fielders players to pick up the win. The Caps then got solid relief work from Mike Hrynio, Chad Blackwell and Bartolome Fortunato, who combined to give up just two hits and strike out eight batters in the final four innings.
"It felt great to snap our little losing skid and do it against a team that had been really hot as of late," Lopez said. "Our bats came alive and exploded out there tonight. It made my job really easy, and it feels good to get my first win with Edmonton."
Thursday's game was the start of a five-game home series against Lake County, and it was another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and 100.3 The Bear, featuring beer on sale for just $3. The series includes 7 p.m. games on Friday and Monday, as well as two afternoon games with 2 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
