Thunder win opener over Roadrunners

EDINBURG, Texas---The McAllen Thunder used four two-run innings to defeat the Edinburg Roadrunners 9-5 in their inaugural home opener on Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (5-12) started the scoring in the top of the first. R.J. Harris reached on a throwing error which allowed him to move to second. Brandon Wilkerson followed with a single that put runners on the corners for Gabe Memmert who followed with an RBI single. A fielding error by the right fielder allowed Wilkerson to come in and score giving Edinburg the early 2-0 lead.

The Thunder (9-8) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded D.J. Dixon hit an RBI single that allowed Eric Eiland to score from third. Yaibel Tamayo then came into score after an error by the pitcher which tied the game at two.

C.J. Beatty led off the top of the second with a double and then moved to third on a ground out. A fielding error then allowed Beatty to score from third and Harris to reach. After

Harris stole second, Memmert hit an RBI double that drove in Harris from second giving the Roadrunners the 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Zach Mandelblatt hit a solo home run to the left field bullpen cutting Edinburg's lead 4-3.

McAllen got RBI singles by James Lilley and Mandelblatt in the bottom of the third which helped them gain the 5-4 lead.

The Thunder scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings pushing their lead to 9-4.

Stantrel Smith hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth for the Roadrunners but Brandon Veronee followed with three straight strikeouts to give McAllen the 9-5 victory.

Kurt Houck (2-1) picked up the win after pitching six innings and allowing four runs, none of which were earned, on eight hits and seven strikeouts.

The Thunder and Roadrunners have the day off on Saturday before a double-header on Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The double-header will consist of two seven inning games and the first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
