June 10, 2011 - North American League (NAmL) News Release

CALGARY - The Calgary Vipers got home runs from Drew Miller and Wilver Perez, belted 19 hits, and defeated the Chico Outlaws 14-6 at Foothills Stadium on Friday night.

After a 33 minute rain delay before the game, Chico got the scoring started in the first with a two-run single from Brian McFall. It was all Calgary after that.

The Vipers scored one in the second and added two more in the third, on a monster two-run blast by Drew Miller to dead center field off Chico starter Travis Kane. Kane could not make it out of the fourth, as Calgary put up four runs and batted around. Jonny Kaplan and Justin Tellam delivered RBI singles and Bryan Burke hit a two-run double.

Calgary added two more in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead, on the two-run homer by Perez off Chico reliever Josh Giles. The Outlaws cut it to 9-5 with a three-run eighth. Al Quintana hit his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to left, and Jay Pecci delivered an RBI single.

The Vipers put it away in the bottom of the inning with five runs off Chico reliever Jason Roenicke, as they batted around for the second time in the game. Louis Templeton hit his third two-run double in two games, and the dagger came on a bases clearing triple from Jonny Kaplan.

Kaplan, Burke, Perez, Miller, and Templeton all had three hits for Calgary. Travis Kane (1-1) took the loss, allowing ten hits and seven runs in three and two-thirds innings. Stephen Whalen (2-1) pitched seven solid innings to earn the victory. The righty scattered seven hits and gave up only two runs. He struck out three. The Outlaws left eleven men on base in the game.

Chico has now lost six straight and Calgary has won five in a row, including the first two games of this four game series. The two teams will play again on Saturday night at Foothills Stadium. First pitch is 5:05 p.m.
