Offense Explodes for 19 Hits

Pounding out 19 hits the Calgary Vipers (8-7) defeated the Chico Outlaws (5-9) 14-6 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta for their fifth straight victory. Five different Vipers ended up with three hits apiece highlighted by home runs from Drew Miller and Wilver Perez while Jonny Kaplan collected a bases clearing triple.
On the mound Stephen Whalen (2-1) tossed seven innings while allowing only two runs and also got into the fun at the plate with a hit, a run, and a run batted in. Chris Bodishbaugh (1) meanwhile picked up the save by closing out the game after coming into it in the eighth inning with the tying run on deck.
Chico jumped in front in the top of the first inning when Jay Pecci singled, Bobby Hill doubled, and Brian McFall singled in both for a 2-0 advantage.
Calgary cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the second as Louie Templeton singled, Jimmy Rohan walked, Matt Kavanaugh flew out on a ten-pitch at-bat to advance Templeton to third, and Whalen collected a sacrifice fly.
The Vipers took the lead in the third frame when Bryan Burke singled, stole second base, Wilver Perez advanced Burke to third with a well placed ground ball, and Drew Miller launched his fourth home run of the season for a 3-2 advantage.
In the fourth inning Calgary scored again as Matt Kavanaugh and Whalen singled, Jonny Kaplan drove in a run with a base hit, Burke knocked in two with a double, Miller was intentionally walked, and with two outs Justin Tellam singled for a run batted in and a 7-2 lead.
The scoring continued in the sixth inning for the Snakes when Burke singled and Perez smashed his first home run of the season for a 9-2 advantage.
The Outlaws got back onto the scoreboard in the eighth as Chris Lubanski reached on a fielding error, Al Quintana hit a two-run home run, Jake Rife and Oscar Sigala walked, and Pecci singled in one for a 9-5 score.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the frame when Perez and Tellam singled, Templeton drove in two with a double, Rohan and Kavanaugh walked to load the bases, and Kaplan cleared the bases with a triple for a 14-5 lead.
Chico closed out the scoring in the ninth as Lubanski doubled and Adam Buchini singled him home for a 14-6 final.
