West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - for the second outing in a row, Kevin Whelan struck out the side in order against Beloit to earn his fourth save in four appearances as West Michigan defeated Beloit, 4-3. Whelan, the Tigers fourth round pick this spring out of Texas A & M, also struck out the side at Beloit last Friday.
The Whitecaps matched a season-high with six doubles, including five in the sixth and seventh innings combined as they came from two runs down to take the lead. Jeff Frazier drove in the first run of the game on a double in the first inning.
The Snappers tied the game with a solo home run off the bat of Deacon Burns in the third. Beloit then scored single runs in the fourth and sixth to build a 3-1 advantage. Frazier and Wilkin Ramirez started the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles, which pulled West Michigan within one run at 3-2.
Three batters later, Josh Lee pulled a game-tying double down the right field line to drive in Ramirez. In the seventh, Brooks Colvin led off with a double. He scored on a two-base hit by Nick McIntyre which put the Whitecaps in front for good, 4-3.
West Michigan also rolled up six doubles at Lansing on April 19. Luke French started the game, pitched 6.1 innings and allowed all three Snappers runs. Ed Clelland followed with 1.2 perfect innings of relief to earn the victory. P. J. Finigan retired the only two batters he faced in the eighth before Whelan finished the game.
