Swing to wear throwbacks Wednesday
August 8, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities announced Monday that they will play their game on Wednesday, August 10, in replica jerseys, celebrating the 1968 St. Louis Cardinals squad that captured the National League pennant. The Cardinals' road uniforms from the World Series that year will then be sold in an auction sponsored by the Swing and Genesis Medical Center.
The money raised will benefit the residents of Westwing Place, a long-term care nursing unit adjoined to Genesis Medical Center in DeWitt, Iowa. Specifically, the proceeds are intended to go towards the addition of a transportation bus for the facility.
In addition to the post-game auction two jerseys will be raffled off during the ballgame, with the winners to be announced in the eighth inning. The jerseys were the same ones worn by the Swing when they were in West Michigan in early June, as the two Midwest League Clubs commemorated the meeting of their parent clubs - the Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers - 37 years ago in the Fall Classic.
The 1968 series was a classic, down-to-the-wire affair, going the full seven games before the Tigers completed their comeback to become world champs. St. Louis jumped out to a 3-1 series lead behind two wins by hall-of-famer Bob Gibson, but Detroit came roaring back. Pitcher Mickey Lolich won three games in the series - all of which were complete games - including a game seven defeat of Gibson to capture both the title and the series MVP award.
Wednesday night's game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start, as the Swing host the Burlington Bees in the final game of the homestand. The evening will also feature a Hooters/97 Rock Beverage Night.
UP NEXT: The Swing and Bees will take a scheduled off day Monday before continuing the series on Tuesday night, as the Swing send Phillip Andersen (3-1, 3.11) to the mound against Danny Christensen (3-5, 3.43). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 6:45.
UPCOMING PROMOTION: Tuesday's game will be the annual Optimist Club night at John O'Donnell Stadium. The Optimist Club has bought out the entire Swing Kids Zone, which will be available free of charge all night long. Tickets are available for all Swing games by calling (563) 328-2000.
