Dayton scores two in ninth to lead, Kane County ties game with homer in ninth, wins with double in extras

Geneva, IL- The Dayton Dragons (17-28, 47-68) have been in a major funk away from Fifth Third Field in the second half of the 2005 season. After winning three of four on the road at Fort Wayne to open the second half, Dayton is just 3-14 out of town. The Kane County Cougars (23-22, 54-60) looked to win its third consecutive game over the Miami Valley's team on Monday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars picked up a 7-6 walk off win in the bottom of the 11th inning, send the Dragons down to a fourth straight defeat.

Right hander Aaron Garrison (ND) got the start for the Dragons while Kane County countered with lefty Trent Peterson (ND). Peterson got the staring nod after scheduled starter Ryan Webb was scratched on Sunday afternoon with a blister on his pitching hand. Both pitchers were solid through the first three innings as each held the opposition off the scoreboard.

Kane County got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth inning off Garrison. Myron Leslie picked up a one out double and was joined on base by Jose Pineda, who drew a walk. Garrison moved both runners up with a wild pitch, Pineda to second and Leslie to third. After Garrison came up big and struck out Raul Padron, he had reached his mandated pitch count and was removed from the game. Jared Sanders (ND) surrendered a two out two RBI single to Ryan Ruiz and Kane County led 2-0.

Dayton tied the ballgame up with a two spot in the top half of the fifth inning off Peterson. Jorge Mejia picked up a lead off walk and moved to second on a single to Drew Anderson. Cody Strait knocked home Mejia with an RBI single to left and the Cougars lead was cut to 2-1. Anderson and Strait pulled off a double steal to move to second and third with one down. Peterson loaded the bases by hitting Tonys Gutierrez with a pitched ball. Jeremiah Piepkorn picked up the first of his three runs batted in with an RBI fielder's choice ground out that tied the game at 2-2.

The Cougars picked up the go ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Sanders with three consecutive two out singles. Leslie picked up the go ahead RBI for Kane County with a base hits to left that scored Eddie Kim. The Cougars had a 3-2 lead after five innings. KC extended the lead to three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Carlos Bohorquez (ND). Once again, Ruiz supplied the offense for the Cougars, this time with a two run homer to dead center that cleared the batter's eye, giving the home team a 5-2 advantage.

Dayton pulled to within a run in the top of the seventh inning off Cougars reliever Mike Mitchell (ND), who replaced Peterson after his 5.0 innings. Piepkorn, the Dragons leader in home runs and runs batted in, skied a Mitchell offering down the line in left for a towering two run home run. Piepkorn's 17th of the season cut the KC to 5-4.

The top of the ninth saw the Dragons rally and show some life that on the current road trip had not been seen. The Miami Valley's team picked up a pair of runs in the ninth off Dan Fyvie (ND) to take a short lived one run advantage. Anderson led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a ground out, moved to third on an Adam Rosales single and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5. With two down John Purdom, who was 0-4 with three strike outs, delivered a two out RBI single to center to give Dayton a 6-5 lead.

The Cougars sent the game to extra innings with a single tally in the bottom of the ninth inning off Brad Cherry (ND). Javier Herrera led off the inning with his 11th home run of the season to tie the game at 6-6 and send it to extra innings.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Cougars picked up the winning run off Alexander Farfan (L, 2-7). Farfan's 51st walk of the season put the leadoff runner Tommy Everidge at first. Travis Buck delivered a gap double to left center scoring Everidge all the way from first giving the Cougars a 7-6 walk off win.

The Dragons and Kane County wrap up the four game series Tuesday night at Elfstrom Stadium with a 7:30 PM first pitch. LHP Camilo Vazquez will make the start for the Dragons in the series finale, while the Cougars will send RHP Trent Peterson to the mound. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 7:00 PM.
