Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Cedar Rapids Kernel starting pitcher Francisco Cordova pitched seven strong innings and led the Kernels to a 7-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night. Sean Rodriguez homered and Freddy Sandoval had three hits for the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids (50-65 overall, 20-25 second half) took the early lead with a first inning run. Sandoval doubled with two outs. Josh LeBlanc drove in Sandoval with a single to right for a 1-0 lead. The Kernels loaded the bases, but did not score again in the first.

But, in the second they struck again. Rodriguez hit a two run homer to left and Cedar Rapids had a 3-0 lead.

Yung Chi Chen started the Wisconsin fourth inning with a triple and Mike Wilson drew a walk. Marshall Hubbard grounded into a double play that scored Chen and got the Rattlers on the board.

The Kernels scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-1. The first run scored when Richard Giannotti struck out, but strike three got to the screen for a wild pitch and a runner scored from third. An RBI groundout by Nate Sutton and a two-out RBI single by Warner Madrigal pushed the final two runs of the inning across the plate.

The Rattlers (64-51, 25-20) chipped away with a Chris Colton home run in the sixth and an RBI ground out by Jack Arroyo in the seventh. Colton has now homered in four straight games.

In the eighth, Wisconsin got two on with one out, but Michel Simard got out of the inning and kept the Kernel lead at three.

Cedar Rapids scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to go up 7-3.

Cordova scattered six hits and allowed three runs over a season high seven innings for his fourth win of the season. Simard worked two scoreless innings for his second save.

The final game of the four game series is Tuesday night. Mark Lowe (6-4, 5.83ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Karl Gelinas (7-7, 4.14ERA) is scheduled to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.
