Lansing Lugnuts News Release

SOUTH BEND - Mark Reynolds' two-run homer capped off a five-run first inning and Ross Ohlendorf scattered five hits in working a complete game shutout as the Lugnuts(56-58, 19-26) were defeated by South Bend(68-47, 27-18) 5-0 on Monday evening at Coveleski Stadium.

Ohlendorf got all the offense he would need in the first inning as the Silver Hawks scored five times off Russ Savickas(5-6). With one out, Alberto Gonzalez singled on the infield and went to second when Augie Murillo drew a walk. Carlos Gonzales then singled into right to score Gonzalez. Cesar Nicolas would then hit a double off the bag at third into left field to plate Murillo and move Gonzales to third. Wilkin Castillo followed with a groundout to second that brought in Gonzales, making it 3-0. Reynolds then blasted his homer to left center to complete the scoring in the first and as it turned out, in the game.

In all, Savickas allowed six hits and five runs in his shortest outing of the season, just 0.2 of an inning.

Lansing's bullpen efforts were stellar to keep the team in the game. Jordy Templet did not allow a hit in 4.1 innings of relief and Dewon Day followed with three solid shutout frames. In all, the Silver Hawks managed just two hits after the first inning. Eight seperate Silver Hawks collected one hit to pace their offense.

Ohlendorf gave up five hits in nine innings, his first complete game of the season. Jason Armstrong and Aaron Mathews each collected a pair of hits in the loss for the Lugnuts, their fifth straight overall to the Silver Hawks.

South Bend has now won all three games in the series and will go for the sweep tomorrow evening at 8:00 p.m. Lansing will send left hander Chi-Hung Cheng to the hill and South Bend will counter with right hander Steven Jackson.
