West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

MIDLAND, MI - Manny Miguelez pitched 5.1 innings with one run allowed and Brett Jacobson finished the game to earn his first professional save as the Whitecaps edged Great Lakes, 2-1. It was a seven inning game that followed the completion of a game suspended by rain Wednesday, which was also won by West Michigan, 4-3.

Miguelez is the first Whitecaps starting pitcher other than Jon Kibler, Alfredo Figaro and Mauricio Robles to earn a victory since Paul Nardozzi got a win in South Bend on May 20. Kibler, Figaro (who has been promoted to Lakeland) and Robles are a combined 17-6 as starters during that time frame.

Great Lakes took the lead, 1-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by Kenley Jansen that drove in Alfredo Silverio from third base. West Michigan had at least one base runner in each of the first six innings, but did not score until the fifth when Kyle Peter tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center field. Jordan Newton hit an RBI triple to right in the sixth inning, which gave West Michigan a 2-1 advantage. Joe Tucker scored the lead run after he was hit by a pitch from Loons starter Given Kutz with two out. Jacobson came on in the bottom of the sixth inning with a runner at second and one out, but struck out the next two batters to preserve the lead. In the seventh, Silverio reached base thanks to lead off the inning on a throwing error by Whitecaps third baseman Cory Middleton. However, Jacobson retired each of the next three hitters, including two more strikeouts to end the game with Silverio at third base. West Michigan has won the first three games of the series following a five game losing streak. Great Lakes has dropped four in a row.
