Whitecaps Saturday Match Sold Out

July 24, 2009 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that this Saturday's match against Puerto Rico Islanders at Swangard Stadium is an over-capacity sell-out. The United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) match, which kicks off at 7 p.m. PDT on Saturday evening, can also be seen live on Shaw TV or online at USLlive.com.

"In seven of the last eight years, we have seen a steady growth in average attendance. In fact, we have averaged over 90 per cent capacity since 2005," said Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi. "There is a real buzz around soccer in this province, and with the recent announcement of the club joining Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2011, interest continues to grow. This was seen when we sold the first wave of 5,000 MLS season ticket deposits in less than 48 hours back in March."

Saturday's match will be the fifth regular season sell-out and sixth at Swangard this year. This included the Nutrilite Canadian Championship match versus Toronto FC of Major League Soccer on June 2.

There are seven regular season home matches remaining in August and September, as well as possible playoff games. This could see the Whitecaps break their previous record of 10 sell-out matches in a season, with the initial mark set during the club's first season in the Canadian Soccer League in 1987. Swangard Stadium's seating capacity has changed over the years. In 1987, the seating capacity was 4,800 before moving to a high of 7,100 from 1998 to 2004. Swangard's current seating capacity for Whitecaps matches is 5,288.

Tickets for the next Whitecaps home match versus Charleston Battery on Friday, August 7, are still available by calling Ticketmaster at 604.280.4400 or by visiting whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
