West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - After being shut out the night before, the Whitecaps scored first against South Bend Friday night. But that one run would be the only one the 'Caps would score and it wasn't enough. The Whitecaps fell 4-1 to the Silver Hawks in the series finale at Fifth Third Ballpark. Friday's game was the last time the two teams will meet until after the All-Star break in June.
The 'Caps got off to a solid start. Starting pitcher Chris Steinborn struck out a batter in each of this first two innings and never allowed a run top score. In the bottom of the third, Vince Blue hit a triple to centerfield and was brought home on an RBI single by Eric Rodland. The 'Caps took the lead 1-0 and held onto it for an inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Silver Hawks took the lead, scoring three runs, including one on a wild pitch. From that moment on, the visitors never relinquished the lead. The Whitecaps made several attempts at a comeback, but none were successful and the 'Caps ended their first homestand of the season with a loss. 'Caps first baseman Kelly Hunt also saw his 11-game, league-leading hitting streak come to an end Friday night. Hunt grounded out in all four of his at bats.
The Whitecaps will head to Battle Creek Saturday for the first of a four game series. Andy Baldwin will head to the mound for the 'Caps and Chase Wright will pitch for the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark on Thursday, April 30 for a four-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
